Five Fire Units Respond To South Knoxville Fire

A house fire in South Knoxville (near Island Home) broke out about 11:30am today (11/15/11) on Pedigo Street.
My first thought on pulling up to the scene was that the address was suspiciously close to some of the arson fires, which broke out back in May. I questioned it and soon learned that investigators ruled out arson, although the official cause has not yet been determined.
From the outside the damage didn’t look extensive, but Larry Akins showed me around the inside and it was soon apparent that everything was lost. The fire damage to the front bedroom is severe while the water and smoke damage to the rest of the house is well beyond what I expected.
The Akins were renting the home and are now staying with friends. The Red Cross was also on the scene and offering assistance until the family finds permanent housing.
While being displaced, The Akins (Angela, Larry and their teenage son and daughter) are somewhat traumatized and confused, but they also convey an unusual amount of strength and will eventually get back on their feet.
Tomorrow we will have updates on the cause of the fire and contact information if you’d like to donate household goods, furniture or any other type of assistance.
